I’ve spent the better part of my time thinking back on the legendary life that Clinton, Oklahoma’s Toby Keith led. In doing so, I have been reminded of the words “True Patriot,” more times than I can count.

Toby Keith was born on July 8, 1961 in Clinton, Oklahoma, which is situated in the western part of the state.

Whether Toby Keith was touring near or far from the Sooner State, he wasn’t shy about reminding you that he was a native of Clinton.

It’s something he took great pride in, which is something we could all learn from him. His venture into the country music scene began in 1993.

His journey to stardom also started that year with the release of “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” which rose to number one on the U.S Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart and peaked at 93 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. That was just the beginning, he went on to numerous hits in the industry.

Those hits included “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,” which was released on May 27, 2002, in the wake of the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001. “I Love This Bar,” a party-driven ballad which was released on August 18, 2003.

His massive hit “American Soldier,” was released on November 4, 2003. This song was penned after meeting with a wounded American Soldier in Afghanistan and honors the bravery of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces.

Over his 31 years in the country music limelight, Keith performed for more than 250,000 troops in 17 countries during his 11 USO tours.

The amount of respect that he had for the brave men and women who serve this country cannot be overstated. He wasn’t one to apologize for his patriotism, either. During a live performance, he once said “Never apologize for being patriotic.”

It’s for that patriotic spirit and his courageous battle against stomach cancer of nearly two years that he will be remembered. He had fought his battle with the monstrous disease with tremendous grace, remarkable strength, and the courage of a warrior since the Fall of 2021.

Although sporadic, he continued to perform until his last day.

His relentless mentality and infectious personality will never be forgotten. Toby gave us all a glimpse of what it looks like to fight the good fight until the bitter end.

He showed us all what it truly means to never lose hope, even in his darkest days. If you want to see a warrior, a patriot, and a life filled with courage, take a look at the life of Toby Keith.

Rest in Peace, Toby. We love you, brother. Thank you for everything you did to show us how to put up a fight until the bitter end and for your patriotic spirit. I can only imagine what you’re seeing now.

Get your rest sir, you earned it.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
